Understanding the Earth – layer by layer

Knowledge of today’s physical, chemical and biological processes on Earth’s surface and its interior, drawn from scientific methods, analysis and models are the basis for understanding the planet we live on. This helps geoscientists to understand the Earth’s history, thus enabling them to provide answers to complex issues of resources, climate, and living conditions. In this way, geoscience contributes to a sustainable development and utilisation of the Earth. Geoscientists find jobs in engineering offices, in resource management and in areas of environment and nature conservation.

At Kiel University, marine and applied research concepts are widely applied to answer questions relating to geoscience. Scientific research covers a multitude of areas including marine geoscience and palaeontology, the physical and chemical characteristics of minerals, applied geology and hydrology, as well as geophysics.

Research at our department is internationally recognized and is supported by various third-party funded projects. Geoscientists from Kiel University are a driving force in numerous national and international projects and are linked closely to colleagues from other scientific institutions.

The department is an active participant in DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centres and the Cluster of Excellence “Future Ocean”, a joint project with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
